Alfred Stiassni, Brno textile manufacturer had the villa built for his family. He and his wife Hermine approached Ernst Wiesner, one of the best Brno architects of the interwar period, who built the house in 1927–1929. Although the exterior of the villa is entirely in keeping with the purist style of the architect, inside the family has established First Republic luxury, including representative lounges with rich wood panelling, marble fireplaces, stucco and historicist furniture. It also includes a large terrace and loggia that opens onto a garden of over three hectares, surrounding the villa on all sides. This way the family were able to enjoy plenty of privacy and sports activities. In the garden we can still find a functional tennis court and swimming pool.

Nine years after moving in, however, the Jewish family had to flee from the oncoming Nazism. After the Second World War, the villa suffered a completely different fate. It began to serve as a luxury hotel for important state visitors. The first was President Edvard Beneš, who stayed in the villa as early as May 1945. He was followed by a host of other prominent people.

Since 2009, the villa has been under the administration of the National Heritage Institute, which started its complete restoration. As an exceptional monument of modern architecture, the villa was opened to the public at the end of 2014. Since 2018, it has been on the prestigious list of Iconic Houses – a global network of iconic houses of the 20th century.

Villa Stiassni offers guided tours of the interior every hour during opening hours and individual tours of the garden at any time during opening hours. We recommend booking or purchasing tickets online.
