The leading Czech experimental theatre Husa na provázku (Goose on a String Theatre) began its activities in the autumn of 1967 as an amateur ensemble of professional actors, students of art schools, and young artists from other fields. The core of the group consisted of students from the Janáček Academy of Performing Arts (JAMU).

The Centre for Experimental Theatre complex, located at the corner of Zelný trh and Petrská Street, where the Goose on a String Theatre is based, consists of three independent and stylistically distinct parts. The complex includes two main buildings – the Baroque House of the Lords of Fanal and the New Stage building – connected by a unique open-air Elizabethan Stage.

Over time, several architectural designs for the buildings were created by Miroslav Masák, Václav Králíček, Karel Hubáček, Jiří Hakulín, and Jan Konečný. In 1993, the architects were awarded first prize in the prestigious Grand Prix architectural competition in the category New Building.

The Main Hall serves as the home stage of the Goose on a String Theatre. The theatre hall is built on a rectangular floor plan. A wooden plank floor connects the stage and the auditorium – there is no fixed boundary between them, allowing the two spaces to merge and creating a closer, more intimate relationship between actors and audience.

All the structural elements used are removable and portable, with a new, original set built for each performance. This embodies the “Provázek” philosophy of freedom and flexibility of space and stage design.

The auditorium consists of tiered platforms and mobile seating. Its capacity is adjusted according to the production’s needs and ranges from 150 to 300 spectators.
