In the 2025/26 season, the Opera of the National Theatre Brno revisits productions that have presented Janáček’s operas in their full artistic power. Among the highlights is the revival of Katya Kabanova in the acclaimed staging by Robert Carsen, originally premiered in Brno in 2016 during the Janáček Brno festival.

This production is considered one of Carsen’s finest. Originally created for the Vlaamse Opera, it has since been performed in over 20 opera houses around the world. Its hallmark is the striking scenography: a stage covered with water, symbolizing Katya’s emotions and tragic fate. The set was designed by Patrick Kinmonth, with lighting by Peter van Praet. The costumes—evoking the 1950s—are simple yet poetically powerful, and the stage space is created using only water and wood.

Carsen’s direction highlights Káťa’s isolation and her tragedy within a small, closed society. The surrounding characters act primarily as a counterpoint to her inner world, creating a universal tragedy of human emotion that leaves a deep impact on the audience.

Why this production is exceptional

  • One of five Janáček operas directed by Robert Carsen – a highlight of his work with the composer.

  • Visually stunning use of water to symbolize the Volga and Káťa’s inner world – both technically demanding and poetically powerful.

  • The direction is restrained, emotionally intense, and deeply focused on the psychology of the main character.

  • Internationally acclaimed – performed at La Scala, the Metropolitan Opera, Covent Garden, and Glyndebourne Festival.

This production breathes new life into one of Janáček’s most intimate works through visual poetry and a profoundly human directorial vision. Don’t miss the return of Katya Kabanova – a past highlight of the Janáček Brno festival.
