An extraordinary concert by the Czech Philharmonic at the Janáček Brno Festival 2026 will offer a truly exceptional and sonically authentic experience. In the iconic brass fanfare of Janáček’s Sinfonietta, musicians from the Central Band of the Czech Army will join the orchestra under the baton of conductor Vasily Petrenko.

This performance of the Sinfonietta holds special significance, as the work celebrates its 100th anniversary. Janáček originally composed it in the spring of 1926 as a ceremonial fanfare. However, the idea quickly expanded into a full symphonic composition, for which he envisioned the inclusion of a military brass ensemble from the very start. During the memorable premiere in June 1926, members of the Prague Garrison Band performed alongside the Czech Philharmonic led by conductor Václav Talich.

A century later, this original concept comes to life on the stage of the Janáček Theatre. The union of a world-class symphonic orchestra and military brass will give the audience the exact monumental sound, rhythmic drive, and brilliance that Janáček infused into his masterwork.

The evening’s program, which features works by Béla Bartók (The Wooden Prince) and Igor Stravinsky (Petrushka) alongside Janáček, brings together three major figures of 20th-century music, linked by their distinctive approach to folk inspirations and rhythmic innovation.

Concert Program:

  • Béla Bartók: The Wooden Prince, Op. 13, Sz. 60, BB 74 (ballet suite)
